Is Silicone Biodegradable? No. Here's What Happens to It Instead
No. Silicone is not biodegradable. Microbes eat carbon chains, and silicone is built on a silicon-oxygen backbone that nothing in soil digests. Buried, a silicone part is still a silicone part after decades. That sounds like the worst possible answer for a material sold as the green alternative to plastic. It is more useful than that, because the property that stops silicone rotting is the same property that lets it be recycled back into new silicone.
Why silicone does not biodegrade
Biodegradation is microbes breaking a material down into water, carbon dioxide and biomass. It works on things built the way living things are built: carbon-to-carbon chains, esters, cellulose. Silicone is a polysiloxane. Its backbone alternates silicon and oxygen, Si-O-Si, with methyl groups hanging off the sides. No common soil organism has the enzymes to cut that backbone. Under sunlight, heat and moisture it does break down very slowly into silica, carbon dioxide and water, but the timescale is decades to centuries, not the months that "biodegradable" implies.
Silicone is also not compostable, not "bio-based" and not a bioplastic. It is made from quartz sand and methanol-derived methyl chloride through an energy-intensive chemical route. See recycled vs virgin silicone for what that route costs in carbon.
Is silicone eco-friendly, then?
Partly, and it matters which part you mean.
- In use: yes. Silicone lasts. A silicone bakeware piece outlives dozens of disposable alternatives. A silicone gasket runs for years at temperatures that destroy organic rubber. Durability is a real environmental benefit, and it is where silicone earns its reputation.
- At end of life: no, unless it is recycled. Landfilled silicone sits there. Burned silicone becomes silica ash, carbon dioxide and water, with none of the chlorine or dioxin problems of PVC, but the material is gone.
- Versus plastic: usually better, not free. Silicone beats single-use plastic on lifespan and on what it releases when burned. It does not beat it on biodegradability, because neither biodegrades.
Biodegradable or recyclable: which one silicone is
People search "is silicone biodegradable or recyclable" as if it were one question. It is two, and the answers are opposite. Silicone is not biodegradable. Silicone is recyclable, chemically. The stable Si-O-Si backbone that microbes cannot cut can be cracked under controlled heat into siloxane building blocks, then rebuilt into fresh silicone oil. The point: "not biodegradable" is a problem only when the material is thrown away. Silicone that is recycled never needs to biodegrade. It becomes new silicone.
What happens to silicone in landfill
Nothing fast. Cured silicone is inert, so it does not leach the way some plastics do, and it does not release methane the way food waste does. It occupies space and holds its embodied energy in the ground indefinitely. Silicone oil is a different case: spilled or dumped fluid coats soil and water surfaces and persists. What happens when silicone is burned
Silicone burns to amorphous silica (fine white ash), carbon dioxide and water. It does not produce the hydrogen chloride, dioxins or furans that make PVC incineration a problem. That makes energy recovery a cleaner end for silicone than for chlorinated plastics, but it still destroys a material that took a lot of energy to make and that could have been recovered instead.
Is silicone oil biodegradable?
No. PDMS fluid is the same polysiloxane backbone in liquid form. It is not water-soluble and does not biodegrade in water or soil in any useful timeframe. Spent silicone fluid is, again, the easiest silicone waste to recycle: filtered, distilled and rebuilt into new PDMS.
So what should a business do with silicone waste?
Stop asking whether it will break down, because it will not, and route it where it is recovered. Production scrap, rejects, worn parts and spent fluid all qualify.
